The April Fool's Blues

“I. The Burial of the Dead

April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain….”
   - The Wasteland , T.S. Eliot

I came for inspiration
I came looking for grace
And found my reflection
In every passing face

           - Jackson Browne

As the rain and the snow
    come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
    without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish
    so that it yields seed
for the sower and bread for the eater
so is my word
that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty
but will accomplish what I desire
    and achieve the purpose
         - Is 55:10-11

The April Fool’s Blues

Knocked down, locked down
Splendidly isolated, the row desolated
Retreated, self-defeated
Solitude , nourishing  gratitude
Humbled, mumbled and rumbled
Clouds hiding sun , no more fun
Raining, pouring, old men snoring
Rivers flowing, no more flowers growing
Voices blaming , fingers pointing
Faded passion, waning compassion
Hear the weeping , eternal sleeping
They’re counting cases , faceless faces
Churches emptied, Souls in need
Finding grace, in a stranger’s face
Songs sung solo, no where to go
More time in bed, prayers being said and said
Social with distance, gone in an instant
Children lost in wondering, parents shuddering
Politicians stuttering , experts muttering
Worried about the lack, everything that dies comes back
No fields of dreams , athletes losing track of schemes
Graduates stranded, employment demanded
First responders , first line servers falling
Ghosts television watching, book reading
Couch napping, puzzle assembling
Music making , more napping
Empty street walking, meal eating
Heads humbly bowing
Face timing, phone calling
Connections being made, trying not to be afraid
Always wearing a mask, this too will pass
Look a lotus flower grows in the mud
…And the morning bird’s healing song can be heard

Healing Rain

Healing rain is coming down
It's coming nearer to this old town.
Rich and poor, weak and strong
It's bringing mercy, it won't be long.

Healing rain is coming down
It's coming closer to the lost and found.
Tears of joy and tears of shame
Are washed forever in Jesus' name.

Healing rain, it comes with fire
So let it fall and take us higher.
Healing rain, I'm not afraid
To be washed in Heaven's rain.

Lift your heads, let us return
To the mercy seat where time began.
And in your eyes I see the pain.
Come soak this dry heart with healing rain.
And only you, the Son of Man
Can take a leper and let him stand.
So lift your hands, they can be held
By someone greater, the Great I Am.

Healing rain, it comes with fire
So let it fall and take us higher.
Healing rain, I'm not afraid
To be washed in Heaven's rain.
To be washed in Heaven's rain.
Healing rain is falling down,
Healing rain is falling down,
I'm not afraid.
I'm not afraid.

A Pandemic Palpitation

“For the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour . What matters therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person’s life at a given moment

A Pandemic Palpitation

The wave of foreboding returned
Continuing to react like some sailboat
Floundering around the fringe of
The directionless eye of that ever-mystical hurricane.
The pilgrim sailor’s heart palpitation
Was the response to the slow-moving tempest.
“What is the answer?”, he wondered.
“Storms come and go” the secret voice said.
“I have been here before” he cautiously responded.
“Things change” the voice continued.
An echo of the chorus of the diverse masters seemed
To become more clear.
“Courage “,
“Worry does not add a moment or day to your life”,
“The race will end someday.”
On and on, and on and on.
The fairway companion
Exhorted wisdom usually left to links navigations,
“There comes a time when the Jedi
Must move on without a master.”
In the solitude of his sanctuary
The illuminated pilgrim’s heart opened to
The sanctification of self-isolation
Remembering to remember a blessing.

There was that time when one master offered him the opportunity
To buy the master’s business.
The master suggested that they go out for a sail
On the pilgrim’s sailboat.
The master requested that they put
The sails down and as they drifted
The master would ask one question
…it was , “What are you willing to die for ?”…
They drifted in silence for a while,
The pilgrim had no where to escape.
The pilgrim finally answered the question and
The master said “hoist the sails and lets go…”

The Leap Day Maze

The Great Maze

"At the day of judgement we shall not be asked by what we have read but what we have done."

― Thomas A Kempis, The Imitation of Christ

“There is no success like failure and failure is no success at all”
              - Bob Dylan, Love Minus Zero

+++++++++++++++++++++

A Leap Day Maze

Just  like that six score and 12 years
Flashed with the blink of an innocent eye.
He launched into a maze that no deity
Would ever conjure .
Walls were built, channels criss crossed, and
Paths designed by self- indulgent architects
Desiring subordination of the innocents, with
Constructs and myths crafted to assure compliance.
Someone determined that the earth rotates every
23 hours , 56 minutes and 4.09053 seconds while
Traveling at 1,000 miles per second around the sun.
And so the story goes.
Trees , streams, rivers , oceans, birds
And all aspects of nature showed no concern for
Mortal interpretations of a mystical grand design.
The pilgrim given choices to discern , he reflected:
“Was Frost right ? Does it really matter in the end
What road to follow?
What of Carroll’s Cheshire Cat’s declaration
About choices ?
So in the grand plan was this determination
That Caesar proclaimed
An extra calendar day every four years
A benefit or just another fallacious
Pronouncement from the mask of authority?”
While the soothsayer witch doctors,
Self appointed kings, masters of war and violence ,silo fillers
Schemed and decreed sanctions and rewards
Defining success and failure,
There are those mystics, poets and spiritual guides
Who choose to let go and be peace,
Listening to the voices of angels-
Following the truth discovered when one
Feels the breath of the divine
In the wind and in the silence of the sanctity of the heart.
Humbled , grateful and serene in the simplicity…
He closed his eyes and was swept away.
