What Matters - Random Reflections for June 2019

Tomorrow Never Knows - Choir! Choir! Choir!

June 6,1944
( In the beginning I misunderstood
The page read “Nothing can give you peace and love”
The teacher said “it is meant that ‘no-thing’'
Gives love or brings peace.
You want peace - live peace .
You want love - live love.”
Recalling a conversation with my dad
I queried about his experiences in the war
He never answered.
The silence told me everything
I needed to know about war and violence.
If we ever had a peaceful exchange it was about
music or baseball.

At times I wondered if I would ever learn.)

"I live on Earth at present, and I don’t know what I am. I know that I am not a category. I am not a thing — a noun. I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process – an integral function of the universe."
                                            -  R. Buckminster Fuller

("A Catholic turned Quaker, O'Reilley rebelled against tidy religious language. "I want every spiritual word to be new, minted that second. Or else I want silence)

“Recognizing that a lifetime is a momentary parenthesis in eternity, we commit to focusing on, and bringing our “A game” to every moment. Impermanence is the second “mark of existence.” Worry about the future isn’t a wise allocation of time. If we slide into that space, we bring the focus back to service in the present.
A liberating aspect of abiding with impermanence is accepting that everything—plants, animals, people, trusted institutions, and civilizations—rise and fall in accordance with natural evolutionary processes. It’s freeing to let go of what is outworn so that the new can emerge. Suffering, the third “mark of existence,” occurs only when we try to hang on to that which we’ll never be able to apprehend.”

(The counselor did her best to help me understand
Why you can never push a river.
“It just flows” , she said. )

WHERE MANY RIVERS MEET

All the water below me came from above.
All the clouds living in the mountains
gave it to the rivers,
who gave it to the sea, which was their dying.
And so I float on cloud become water,
central sea surrounded by white mountains,
the water salt, once fresh,
cloud fall and stream rush, tree roots and tide bank,
leading to the rivers’ mouths
and the mouths of the rivers sing into the sea,
the stories buried in the mountains
give out into the sea
and the sea remembers
and sings back,
from the depths,
where nothing is forgotten.
-- David Whyte

That’s The Way it Goes - Joe Brown ( G. Harrison)

( They say that the word desire comes from the Latin meaning “of the Spirit/Source.”
St.Augustine suggested that all and any desire is a longing for God - an eternal source of completeness-peace- joy .Where there is desire there is prayer.)

In Held Twas I - Procol Harum

In Held Twas I

Opening Verse -

[Glimpses of Nirvana]
In the darkness of the night, only occasionally relieved by glimpses of Nirvana as seen through other people's windows, wallowing in a morass of self-despair made only more painful by the knowledge that all I am is of my own making ...
When everything around me, even the kitchen ceiling, has collapsed and crumbled without warning. And I am left, standing alive and well, looking up and wondering why and wherefore.
At a time like this, which exists maybe only for me, but is nonetheless real, if I can communicate, and in the telling and the bearing of my soul anything is gained, even though the words which I use are pretentious and make you cringe with embarrassment, let me remind you of the pilgrim who asked for an audience with the Dalai Lama.
He was told he must first spend five years in contemplation. After the five years, he was ushered into the Dalai Lama's presence, who said, 'Well, my son, what do you wish to know?' So the pilgrim said, 'I wish to know the meaning of life, father.'
And the Dalai Lama smiled and said, 'Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?’”

You didn't have to say
That you would always stay
For I knew all of that love
Was coming from you)

"Tell Me a story"

In this century, and moment , of mania
Tell me a story.

Make it a story of great distances, and starlight.

The name of the story will be Time,
But you must not pronounce  its name.

Tell Me a story of deep delight"

- Robert Penn Warren
